GLADSTONE FURNACE CO.
In a world where most things are temporary
and throwaway, a successful business founded
in 1948 is a rarity. That’s why Northland home
and business owners have relied on Gladstone
Furnace & A/C Co. for nearly seven decades. A
locally owned, family business since its
inception, Gladstone Furnace & A/C Company
combines professional expertise with honesty
and integrity. The story began in January, 1948
when husband and wife William and Billie Becker
envisioned a heating company that would offer
the highest level of professional service and
installations, combined with honesty and
integrity. They began as Becker’s
Furnace Company, working out of
their garage on North East 57th
Street. It wasn’t long before their
philosophy drew legions of loyal
customers. In 1953, they constructed
their own building on North Oak. When
Gladstone incorporated as a city in
1952, the building was used as a place
for "city hall council meetings, so not surprisingly,
the Beckers renamed their company, Gladstone Furnace Company.
The family also grew and its modern history was born.
First came son William (Bill Jr.) followed
by Daniel. Bill worked summers learning
the business and in 1972 became a
full-time technician. He also married
Valerie in 1974 and she became the “voice”
of Gladstone Furnace, answering the
phone and working alongside mom in the
office. Brother Dan next joined the
company, also working summers before
becoming a full-time technician in 1988.
Mom and Dad Becker retired that same year. Sadly, dad
died only six years later, while mom continued to help out in the office until
her passing in 2002. Dan married Amy in 2001 and in 2009 she joined the company as the new voice on the phone. Dan and Amy’s son, Alex, has been working with Dan to become the third generation to continue to serve and grow. Most of all, these generations continue the family’s commitment to important values, from the community to their church, and to the loyal customers that have been with them thought these 67 years. Not surprisingly, these qualities and values continue today. They are reflected by full licensing, accreditation from the Better Business Bureau, rock solid referrals on Angie’s List, and the enthusiastic endorsement of satisfied customers across the Northland.
